At TMS, we strive to maintain low carbon footprints by implementing various events to spread awareness. One such event is Sustainability Week, held from 13th to 17th of June.
It started with 'Minimum-Paper Monday', which saw students and staff minimise the usage of fresh paper in school. Students were asked to refrain from taking printouts to school and were instead asked to maximise the use of their devices and notebooks instead. The next celebration was 'Tasty Tuesday'. Students were asked to bring healthy vegetarian snacks to school to spread awareness about the need to make healthy sustainable food choices. Classes also had a meeting with parents regarding the various food choices they make daily and any “tiffin stories” they can share. The next was 'No-Vehicle Wednesday'. The school was asked to use more sustainable alternative transport to school and TMS saw many students taking part in this event with alacrity as they carpooled, walked or cycled to school. The next day was 'Trash Thursday'. On this day, the Inter-House Newspaper Collection Drive came to an end. Members of all houses took part with readiness and submitted their newspapers in a bid to win the competition. Recyclable materials such as e-waste, HP toners, plastic and aluminium were also collected. And finally, the last event took place; 'Digital Detox Friday'. All classes were asked to switch off the lights and utilise natural light as much as possible. Electronic devices were not to be brought to school, in light of the impact they make on electricity supply due to their increasing usage day by day.
The week ended with the IH Newspaper Collection Drive results being announced. Spring came first with a whopping 1336 kg of newspapers, along with Summer (1261 kg), Winter (1236 kg) and Autumn (1022 kg) coming in second, third and fourth positions, respectively. It was all a team effort to spread awareness about recycling and reusing. All five of these days make up the enlightening Sustainability Week. Such a week will help spread awareness of the need to conserve the environment in which we live, and will help us not take these essential resources for granted.
