Kerala Piravi dinam, or Kerala Day celebrated on 1st November every year marks the day the three independent provinces of Malabar, Cochin, and Travancore came together to form the state of Kerala. The state of Kerala was created on 1st November 1956.

In TMS we celebrate this occasion on November 7th, 2023, with the pride and respect it deserves. The Malayalam department of our school is headed by Sindhu Santhakumari. The event started with the lighting of the Nilavilakku (usually lit during auspicious occasions).
We start this day with a bang, we are shown the culture of the state through dances such as Mohiniyattam, Kalaripayattu, and Margamkali. Soon after they showcased the literature, and the various writers of this state like Chandra Chattopadhyay. To boost patriotism, they showed famous people who have done good for our country. For example, I learned that the ISRO is led by a Keralite Sreedhara Panicker Somanath, and the legendary warrior Unniyarcha. They also showed non-natives such as Shashi Tharoor who have helped the state progress.
Feeling hungry? They had a stall “selling” all the famous snacks of the state, as well as food that is close to every Malayali’s heart. When you ask the vendors what they make the food, they point you in the direction of all the pots and pans of the state. Now you may be wondering, how many pots does one need? At least 50, deep and shallow, tall and short, wide and narrow there are enough dishes in the state to start a shop.
On the screen, they had pictures of every state in Kerala, which could make one homesick. When leaving the dance room be careful not to stand on the pookalam, which is a bright and colorful arrangement of flowers laid in intricate designs. As you leave this beautiful celebration, you’re shown one more look at the state through a wonderful mural painted by the students.
Kerala Piravi is up there with Onam and Vishu. This celebration was well thought out and did justice to the state. It was unforgettable and magical. Transporting you to the state of Kerala.
